  • The real issue is that mental health in the United States is an absolute fucking shitshow.

988 is a bandaid. It’s an attempt to pretend someone is doing anything. Really a front for 911.

Even when I had insurance, it was hundreds a month to see a therapist. Most therapists are also trained on CBT and CBT only because it’s a symptoms focused approach that gets you “well” enough to work. It doesn’t work for everything, it’s “evidence based” though in that it’s set up to be easy to measure. It’s an easy out, the McDonald’sification of therapy. Just work the program and everything will be okay.

There really are so few options for help.

  • Depending on where you live, all 988 does is forward your information to the police. When I’ve called it, basically a bunch of questions to try to get you to trip that line, then nothing but “I’m sorry to hear that :(“

There’s no requirement that the volunteer have clinical experience. I’ve heard horror stories of people being hung up or mocked. The company that runs it (and subcontracts it to several companies that they hide, it can be very difficult to figure out who is actually taking your call) is opaque and does not listen to complaints.

988 is mostly a fancy ad campaign.

See my mom just forced me to graduate early, stole all of my scholarship money, and no one told me that taking Calc 3 and 17 hours of engineering classes as a 17 year old was a bad idea! I lost my national merit scholarship and had to sell my body to creepy old dudes to get a college degree in a field that said “no more trannies allowed” 3 years after I graduated!

  • Knowledge based fields were historically a “safe space” for queer and disabled people. If you are just super fucking smart and could be a wizard in a programming language, or were a genius physicist, you could get to the point where you were too valuable to fire for being trans or disabled. I may be trans and an unperson in the place I live, but I can do calculus, and there’s no way they can take that away from me.

There’s an attack on knowledge itself going on right now. A desire by the rich to control information. They want to force us into an unreality where skill and knowledge are meaningless. This hurts people who are socially marginalized, because it takes away one of our few paths for economic survival.

It goes with the attacks on DEI. What they want is a tool that can replace the need for talent, so that they can select who gets to have jobs. They want all jobs to be Graeber’s “bullshit jobs” so that skill is meaningless and they can allot them out to the people they think “deserve” them.
